THE RANDOLPH RESCUE PROJECT |
On March 1, 2008 a small town's Mayor in the tip of Southwestern Iowa placed a $5.00 bounty on any cat caught to help control the overpopulation of the free-roaming cat problem. The city would allow ample time for the cat to be claimed by an owner before it was properly euthanized under Iowa Code.
The story of the bounty made the media and animal welfare organizations joined together to offer the city of Randolph a solution to control their overpopulation problem by utilizing and maintaining a TNR (trap-neuter-return) program.
Representatives from Best Friends Animal Society, Alley Cat Allies , Feline Friendz, and Hearts United For Animals, to name a few, met with Mayor Vance Trively and city leaders to discuss the program and explain how a TNR program will help his current problem and control feral/stray overpopulation in the future. On March 17, Best Friends Animal Society's Feral Cat Director, Shelly Kotter and RVAS', Executive Director, Joe Pundzak, sealed the deal with the mayor by talking face-to-face and listening to the "real" problem he and the town of Randolph were having.
"It didn't matter HOW the town of Randolph got in this situation," said Joe Pundzak. "The important thing was to get the problem under control, humanely. Mayor Trively didn't know other options were available."
Best Friends Animal Society and the City Council of Randolph signed a resolution on March 24, 2008 and the coordination began to get rescue groups ready to save lives. The plan of action will be a well orchestrated program and will take about a month to complete all the services necessary to get a good hold on the problem. During this process, the town leaders and residents will be educated on the TNR program and learn how to implement this program in the future. To get the problem under control initially wil cost an estimated $10,000.
"An entire community will benefit from this resolution." says Linda R. Blakely, Director. "This is a very big step in the right direction for this community and we hope to continue working with these rescue groups in the future to develop and initiate humane animal solutions in other communities. "
Each organization is donating many supplies, services and volunteers to get the job done. Please consider supporting their efforts by donating funding or supplies needed to:
